De combinatie van het Antarctisch Schiereiland en de gebieden rond de Zuidpoolcirkel is een van de meest unieke expeditiecruises die u kan ondernemen. Deze scheepsreis vindt plaats tegen het eind van de Antarctische zomer (februari en maart).
Op dit moment van het jaar bestaat de mogelijkheid om ver in zuidelijke richting te varen. Het overschrijden van de Zuidpoolcirkel is een groots avontuur met veel ijs, ijsbergen, adembenemende landschappen en een rijk vogel- en dierenleven.

Reisroute Detail

DAG 1 USHUAIA In the afternoon, we embark in Ushuaia and sail through the Beagle Channel.

DAG 2-3 DRAKE PASSAGE During these two days we will sail across the Drake Passage. When we cross the Antarctic Convergence, we arrive in the circum-Antarctic up welling zone. In this area we may meet Wandering Albatrosses, Grey Headed Albatrosses, Black-browed Albatrosses, Light-mantled Sooty Albatrosses, Cape Pigeons, Southern Fulmars, Wilson’s Storm Petrels, Blue Petrels and Antarctic Petrels. Near the South Shetland Islands, we glimpse at the first icebergs.

DAG 4-9 HANNAH POINT - BAILY HEAD - ORNE ISLANDS - GERLACHE - STRAIT - CUVERVILLE ISLAND - DANCO ISLAND - CRYSTAL SOUND - NEUMAYER CHANNEL We may start our first day in Antarctica with a landing at Hannah Point, where we will find a nice variety of Gentoo penguins, Chinstraps and southern giant petrels, as well as Elephant seals hauling out on the beach. At Deception Island, we will try to land at Baily Head home to a colony of ten thousands of Chinstrap Penguins. Deception itself is a sub ducted crater, which opens into the sea, creating a natural harbour for the ship. Here we find hot springs, an abandoned whaling station, thousands of Cape pigeons and many Dominican gulls, Brown and South Polar Skuas and Antarctic Terns. Wilson’s Storm Petrels and Black-bellied Storm Petrels nest in the ruins of the whaling station in Whalers Bay. Good walkers may hike from Baily Head over the ridge of the crater into Whalers Bay, while our ship braves its entrance into the crater through the spectacular Neptune´s Bellow into the ring of Deception Island. On our way further South we will sail to Orne Islands with large colonies of Chinstrap Penguins and a beautiful view across the Gerlache Strait or to Cuverville Island, a small precipitous island, nestled between the mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula and Danco Island. It contains a large colony of Gentoo Penguins and breeding pairs of Brown Skuas. In Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay with its myriad icebergs and deep cut fjords, we have the opportunity to set foot on the Antarctic Continent. We shall have the opportunity for zodiac cruising between the icebergs in the inner parts of the fjords. We sail through the spectacular Lemaire Channel to Petermann Island offering Adelie Penguins and Blue-eyed Shags. We also try to land at Pleneau Island with Elephant Seals and fair chances to encounter Humpback, Minke and Fin Whales. We head south along the Argentine Islands to Crystal Sound, south of the polar circle. The landscape is very impressive with very high mountains and huge glaciers. At the Fish Islands we land at one of the southernmost Adelie Penguin and Blue-eyed Shag colonies in the Antarctic Peninsula. A base visit will also be provided, to give you an insight about the life of modern Antarcticans working on the White Continent. At Detaille Island, south of the Polar Circle, in Crystal Sound we reach probably our farthest south. Sailing north again through Neumayer Channel and Gerlache Strait, we arrive at the Melchior Islands with a very beautiful landscape and again possibilities for zodiac cruising among the icebergs, where we may encounter Leopard Seals, Crabeater Seals and whales.

DAG 10-11 DRAKE PASSAGE In the Drake Passage we have again a chance of seeing many seabirds.

DAG 12 USHUAIA We arrive in the morning and disembark in Ushuaia.

Fysieke conditie: Een doorsnee goede conditie en sportieve ingesteldheid volstaat. De wandelingen tijdens de uitstappen aan land (2 à 3 uur) verlopen op een rustig tempo. Passagiers die voornamelijk van het varen willen genieten en maar even aan land willen verblijven kunnen natuurlijk ook meevaren.
Bagage: Maximum toegelaten gewicht hoofdbagage: 20 kg
Documenten: Voor Spitsbergen, Groenland en IJsland volstaat een geldige identiteitskaart. Voor Antarctica is een reispas verplicht. Geen visum nodig.
Transport: Iedere reis gebeurt aan boord van een ijsversterkt modern en comfortabel expeditieschip. Op ieder schip biedt een grote scheepsbrug de nodige ruimte voor een optimale natuurobservatie. De kapitein en de bemanning hebben jarenlange ervaring met navigatie in de poolgebieden en door het pakijs. De maaltijden aan boord worden verzorgd door Europese koks. De eetruimte wordt eveneens gebruikt voor lezingen.
Vlucht: De vluchten heen en terug zijn niet inbegrepen. Vreemde Kontinenten kan echter wel uw vluchten boeken. Prijzen zijn op aanvraag beschikbaar. Vluchttarieven zijn seizoensgebonden en kunnen sterk variëren. Daarom vermelden wij bij de meeste reisprogramma's uitsluitend de kostprijs van het scheepsarrangement. Voor aansluitende vluchten zoeken wij steeds de voordeligste tarieven voor u uit. Soms zijn de vluchttijden zodanig dat u, in aansluiting op de scheepsreis, een of meerdere overnachtingen aan land dient bij te boeken. U neemt hiervoor best contact op met ons kantoor.

Single: Individuele deelnemers kunnen, op aanvraag en indien beschikbaar, een kajuit delen met een medereiziger. Prijs voor een single kajuit: op aanvraag.
Type kajuit: Aan boord van de motorschepen heeft u de keuze uit verschillende huttypen. De kajuiten zijn praktisch ingericht en hebben alleen raam en buitenzicht.
TYPE A: standaard tweepersoonshut met een gemeenschappelijke sanitaire blok op de gang. TYPE B: tweepersoonshut met privé-sanitair.
Sommige schepen beschikken eveneens over driepersoonshutten en een suite. Op het zeilschip de 'Noorderlicht' verblijft u in tweepersoonshutten. De gemeenschappelijke sanitaire blokken vinden zich op de gang.
Het lichaam dient zo goed als mogelijk afgeschermd te worden tegen de wind. Voorzie hiervoor verschillende dunne kledingslagen boven elkaar (enkele dunne lagen isoleren beter dan 1 dikke trui).

• foto- en filmapparatuur + voldoende voorraad films
• voorzie reservebatterijen, een UV-filter en een bescherming tegen stof en water (plastiekzak is het meest efficiënte)
• verrekijker, een flora- en vogelgids zijn aanbevolen
• zonnebril, zonnebrandolie, lippenzalf, toiletgerei
• kleine veldfles (1 liter), zakmes, persoonlijke geneesmiddelen, enkele plastic zakken (diverse formaten)
• een reservebril, indien u contactlenzen draagt
• een klein dagrugzakje
